A fantastic sum totalling over £2,000 was raised for local charities at this year’s hugely successful Connaught Village Summer Festival, which saw large crowds flock to the Hyde Park Estate’s retail quarter, owned by landlords, The Church Commissioners.
Following the success of the traditional village fete, residents and visitors generously donated a total of £1,377 to COSMIC – the children’s charity at nearby St Mary’s Hospital, Paddington. Of this, the Village’s commercial letting agents - Briant Champion Long - singularly raised almost £400 from its BBQ which supplied hungry festival-goers with food and refreshments throughout the course of the afternoon. The Village’s managing agents, Knight Frank, also showed their support with a hospitality tent on Connaught Street, offering drinks, candyfloss and balloons.
A further £500 was raised from the hugely successful and popular Hyde Park Dog Show – which was donated to the Mayhew Animal Rescue Centre. Volunteers from the centre were present on the day to help the Hyde Park Veterinary Centre manage the show. The tombola, run by St John’s Church, also raised £270 towards the refurbishment and restoration of the church interior. Connaught Kitchens, located at 2 Porchester Place, also ran a raffle in support of the church restoration.
This year’s event, which is annually funded by the Church Commissioners, was bigger and better than ever, drawing thousands of visitors to the Village on Wednesday 15 June. Connaught Street, Kendal Street and Porchester Place were all closed to traffic on the day to host a huge range of activities that included fairground rides, jugglers, stilt walkers, face painters and last year’s much loved band ‘Under the Driftwood Tree’.
A fantastic addition to this year’s line up included The Hyde Park Dog Show, which itself attracted almost 100 entries with dogs of all breeds descending on the Village to compete in one of five inspired categories, all vying for the most coveted prize of all – The Hound of Hyde Park. Also new this year was the children’s art show, sponsored by Radcliffes Le Brasseur, featuring entries from local schools Ravenstone Day Nursery and Wetherby Prep, under the theme ‘My Favourite Summer Outing.’
Connaught Village is situated in the heart of central London, a stone’s throw from Oxford Street and yet off the beaten track, the Village remains intimate and full of character. With a host of independent retailers such as Argentine restaurant, Casa Malevo, fashion boutiques De Roemer and Viola, and Royal hat makers Patey Hats, Connaught Village is the perfect mix of general and specialist retail.
